Nancy Zieman’s Sew Knits with Confidence Blog Tour with GIVEAWAY!

Posted by julia on Thursday, April 25th, 2013

Did you know that we have added jersey knits to our basics collection?  You'll be able to find all of your favorite dots, stripes and knit! We expect them to arrive in May, but here is a sneak peak:

With the knit bug upon us, we just had to jump on board when Nancy Zieman asked us to participate in her Sew Knits with Confidence Blog Tour.

To truly test out whether Nancy's book can help you sew knits with confidence - I was chosen.  I have always been terrified of sewing with knits, and I think the most I have ever done with knits is embellish a onesie:)

So it was with a mixture of excitement and trepidation that I received Nancy's book and patterns.  I read through her book, which is laid out in a very easy to follow format.  For very visual people like me, her use of pictures and little "Note from Nancy" boxes were extremely helpful and made the entire book a breeze to understand.

So with our new Navy Polka Dot knit, I opted to Sew the Santa Fe Dress Pattern.

SEW KNITS Santa Fe Dress and Top Pattern by Nancy Zieman of Sewing With Nancy

I can't tell you how easy this pattern was to whip up!  When it comes to knits, I am an absolute beginner, and I had no problem at all making this dress.  Again, she included plenty of photos and very clear instructions.  Here is the final result:

This bodice detailing on the dress is fabulous and flattering.  I decided to add our Hot Pink Riley Blake Circle Trim to give it a little punch of color.  The dress can be made with or without sleeves and can be lengthened (think maxi dress) or shortened according to your taste.

At the last minute, I also decided to try my hand at the Boatneck Tunic Top from the Monterey Knit Collection Pattern.  I played with this pattern a little: I cut it shorter and curved the bottom a bit.  I also split the sleeves into 2 different knit fabrics.  All of the gray striped part of the pattern was cut in a size Large.  The gray/yellow striped lower sleeves were cut in a medium for a more fitted look on the arms.  I left all of the serged edges exposed as well.  This pattern took about an hour to complete from start to finish.

And now for the fun part!  Leave a comment and I will be giving away 2 prizes:

1st place winner will receive Nancy's book: Sew Knits with Confidence, 2 of Nancy's patterns, and 1 yard of Riley Blake Designs knit fabric.

2nd place winner will receive 2 of Nancy's patterns and 1 yard of Riley Blake Designs knit fabric.

To be eligible, simply leave a comment below.  Winners will be chosen by a random drawing.

Winners will be announced April 28th!

  9. I used to sew with knits a very long time ago - before the machines did such a wonderful job of stitching this fabric and whenever you moved the stitching would break - UGH. I swore I would never touch knits again. However, as they say - never say never. I want to try again and would love to have this book (such a great teacher) to learn how to. Great giveaway - thanks.

  225. Ooooohhhhhh! I would love to win this! I would make a cute dress or two for my daughter! Thank you for the opportunity!

  226. There will be leggings! They will be worn with the (cute - if I say so myself) cotton skirts as summer starts to turn to fall. For comfort and style for my wee fashionist DGDs. Do you think a Grandma would look too silly in leggings and a mini skirt? Grandmothers are just antique little girls, you know? Maybe a more modest dress, the one you made is quite nice!
