Log Cabin Pin Cushion

Hi, I'm Katie Trott from Lincoln, California. I own a small quilt shop, Sew Katie Jean, that has been open for just 9 months! It has been a dream come true for me.
One of the first quilts that I ever made was a scrappy Log Cabin Quilt. I love how it came together so easily and that I could use all of my favorite fabrics, even the smaller pieces that I had been saving.

So I wanted to share with you this tutorial to make a pincushion, using Riley Blake Fabrics, Apple of My Eye by The Quilted Fish.

Supplies:
Fabrics from Apple of My Eye by The Quilted Fish
scissors, sewing machine, rotary cutter, cutting mat, straight pins
6” square of muslin fabric
Poly Fill stuffing
1/4” sewing seam
Pick out a red fabric for a traditional log cabin center. Fussy cut this first piece for the center in a 2” x 2” square.

Cut other selected fabrics into 1" x 7" strips.
Find center of your muslin fabric by folding square in half and then half again. Lay the 2” x 2” square in the middle of your 6” muslin fabric. The muslin will give your sewing project a nice foundation.

Cut piece #2 of fabric measuring 2” x 1”. Sew this piece to the top of the center square, right sides together. Fold open and press with your iron.

Working clock wise around your block, sew on the next piece of fabric. It should measure 2 1/2” x 1”.

Continue to work clock wise around your square until the 6” block is covered with your pieces of 1” width strips.

Trim and square up your block. Mine measured 5 1/2” square.

Cut a back piece of fabric, with the same measurements.
Lay both squares on top of each other, right sides together. Pin, leaving a 3”. Sew.

Clip corners, and turn right sides out. Press.
Fill with stuffing of your choice and whip stitch the small opening closed.

You are finished with your Log Cabin Pin Cushion!
I hope you had fun making it and are on your way to making your very own Scrappy Log Cabin Quilt!
Happy Sewing!
