Cutting Instructions

1.  Cut two 3" squares of main print

2.  Cut eight 1.25" x 3" rectangles of main print

3.  Cut four 1" x 3" rectangles of "ribbon" fabric

4.  Cut one 3" x 7" rectangle of "ribbon" fabric

Assembly Instructions

1.  With right sides together, sew the "ribbon" sides of the cushion: one 1.25" x 3" rectangle to the 1" ribbon rectangle fabric.  Then sew another 1.25" x 3" rectangle to the other side of the "ribbon".  Press well.  Repeat this step for the other three sides.

2.  Sew the two 3" squares to either side of one of the "ribbon-wrapped" squares.  Stop sewing 1/4" from edge.

3.  Sew two of the "ribbon-wrapped" squares to either side of the bottom "ribbon-wrapped" square.  Stop sewing 1/4" from edge.  Be certain to line up the seams, nestling them next to each other with seams pressed in opposite directions.

4.  Sew the final square onto the edge of one side, lining up seams and sewing until 1/4" away from the edges.

5.  Match the edges right sides together, pin and sew until 1/4" from top.  Repeat this for each of the four sides.

6.  For the top of the pincushion, line up the four sides with the edges of the top.  Pin in place.  Sew along the edges, leaving one side open for turning.  Turn right side out.

7.  Using crushed walnut shells (my preference for the weight it gives the pincushion), or filling of your choice, fill the pincushion.  Crushed walnut shells are available for sale at pet stores as a litter for birds!

8.  When you are close to getting the pincushion filled, begin hand stitching the seam closed.  Leave just enough room for a funnel to finish filling the pincushion.  Be sure to pat, wiggle, and shake the pincushion to fill in as tight as possible with the walnut shells.

9.  Stitch up the seam.

10.  Using the 3" x 7" rectangle of "ribbon" fabric, fold and press the edges in 1/4".  Fold the fabric in half in either direction and press.  Topstitch along the edges to create a finished rectangle.  Fold, scrunch, or tie the bow any way you'd like!  For a fuller bow, use multiple pieces of fabric as in the bow below.
