Flower Pincushion

My name is Randi and I blog at Dukes and Duchesses. I'm so happy to share a fun pincushion tutorial today.
My girls are learning to sew and I decided to make them a cute little flower pincushion to use. My kids love spaces for treasures so this pincushion has a fun little pocket sewn to the back to hold small instructions or a packet of needles.
Supplies you'll need:
- flower template {I drew my own: a simple circle about 7 inches wide and a petal}
- up to 4 coordinating fabric pieces, depending how much variety you want
- coordinating ric rac
- button
- needle and thread
- fiberfill
Using your template, cut three circles, two from your main fabric, and one from a coordinating piece. Cut 12 petal pieces, six from one fabric, six from another.
Sew a button to the center of one circle.
Fold the contrasting circle in half and stitch ric rac along the edge. This will form your pocket.
Lay the pocket across the bottom of the other circle {the one without the button}, right sides facing up, and baste around the edge.
To make the petals, place two petal pieces right sides together and stitch around the edge, leaving the bottom open. Repeat until you have six petals. Turn right side out and press.
Pin the petals around the edge of the top circle piece {the one with the button} and baste in place.
Pin the circles, right sides together with the petals inside, and stitch around the outside, leaving a small opening for turning.
Turn the pincushion right side out, press lightly, and stuff with fiberfill.
Simple, right? It would even be a fun early sewing project for a young one!
