RBD MACHINE EMBROIDERY FAQs
Please read through all the instructions that came with your project before beginning. Fully illustrated, step-by-step instructions for each project can be found inside each project folder on the USB. Visit our Project Updates page for any file or instructional updates before starting any project.
What physical media types do Riley Blake Designs Machine Embroidery Projects come on?
RBD Machine Embroidery projects are available on USB Thumb Drives only. USB drives are less likely to be damaged from repeated use, can be inserted directly into most embroidery machines, and are easier to transport than CDs.
Can I buy the projects directly from you?
Riley Blake Designs does not sell directly to the public. All of our quality products are available through your local quilt/fabric/machine shop. If you are a store interested in carrying RBD products, please visit our Wholesale Accounts page.
What’s the difference between Hoop Size and Stitchable Area?
The Stitchable Area is the rectangular dimensions within the hoop that can be stitched completely by the embroidery machine without interference from the hoop. This size is not always the same as the manufacturer’s stated hoop size dimensions. Always check or measure the stitchable area before you begin a project.
Which file formats are included in your projects?
.DST, .EXP, .HUS, .JEF, .PES, .VIP, .VP3, .XXX are included with all RBD Machine Embroidery Designs
Why are .ART & .EMB formats not included on the USB?
The .ART and .EMB formats are considered editable formats. Riley Blake Designs works with top designers and iconic brands from around the world and these licensing agreements require us to maintain the security and integrity of the artwork. As such, editable formats are not allowed. Please see below for Bernina information re: .ART files.
The .ART format is native to Bernina digitizing software and the best alternative file format to use with a Bernina machine is .EXP.
Bernina embroidery designs are divided into three separate files: the .EXP file, which is the actual embroidery file, the .INF file (text) with information about object properties and the .BMP file (image), which will be shown on your machine display. It is best to include all three files for each design to ensure your machine has all the information necessary to display the design and all of its related information properly.
If your machine requires an .ART format, you can download Bernina’s Free ARTlink software directly from their website here.
Does RBD provide .SVG cut files with their Machine Embroidery applique designs?
The digitized images and files are licensed artwork from RBD Designers or brand partners. As such we are required to maintain the security and integrity of the artwork. This precludes us from including editable formats like .SVG cut files.
What is the process for RBD Applique In-The-Hoop without .SVG files?
Much like our quilt patterns, Riley Blake Designs ME patterns give cutting instructions for each piece of fabric. Patterns allow for an excess 1/2" around all sides of the applique shape(s) in the same hoop. Machines will have the following steps to guide you through the applique process in an easy and streamlined system:
1. Placement stitch: The machine will stitch out the applique shape(s)
2. Tack-down stitch: The precut fabric is placed down, and the machine "tacks down" the fabric - with a special RBD tack-down stitch [2 parallel rows of stitching on each shape, which will later both be covered.] Using applique scissors, the embroiderist will hold on to the excess fabric and follow the shape to trim close to the outer stitches.
3. Cover stitch: Let the machine do all the work and cover the tack-down stitches and raw edge of the fabric with an RBD, artist-exclusive, cover stitch.
I don’t use the same brand of thread that you recommend. Can you help me convert colors?
